I have always had a bit of an interest in Startup Weekend. For those who have never heard of it, it's an event where a group of people get together for a weekend, with the end goal of creating an entire startup in that time period. It's more an exercise in learning than in profit, but some really neat things have come out of past Startup Weekends.
Attending a Startup Weekend in the past was mostly a matter of crossing your fingers until one showed up in your area, but now they have a City Vote that helps guide where future events will be held. It may be a bit of a long shot, but I've decided to start a campaign to hold a Startup Weekend here in Charleston, South Carolina. We're not exactly the biggest tech hotspot in the country, but I think we have a lot more resources than most people realize, and this would be a great way to show it. We have some major software companies, a very active blogger community, and great local resources for startups. Read this article by one of our local bloggers if you think this is out of our reach.
Maybe it's a bit ambitious to think we can beat out major cities like Philadelphia, Chicago, and Denver, but I think we should at least try. If you're in the South Carolina area, and think we can do this, GO VOTE!
